Are you waiting for the announcement of Indonesian (DIKTI) scholarship winners?

Are you waiting for the announcement of Indonesian (DIKTI) scholarship winners?

Nearly 1000 applicants of DIKTI scholarship is now waiting for the announcement of final winners. They should check regularly at DIKTI website (http://ditnaga-dikti.org) to find the announcement published. But from day to day, the announcement has not been occurred yet.

I have a tip in this case, i.e., we should not visit the site every day in order to obtain the announcement. Assuming that the winners are announced via the site, then we can ask for third party service to do this task, i.e., to monitor if the site changes.

Recently I have registered to two free services: the first is www.changealarm.com and the second is www.changedetect.com. What are the differences between these services. The former is easier to register but it has fewer control in setting the monitoring behavior than the latter.

Using this method, we only will visit the site when the site changes. We hope that the change is the addition of the announcement mentioned above. How do we know if the site changes? We know this from the email notification sent by the services.

Shopping Guide for Laptops and their peripherals

What do you do if you want to buy a new laptop? Most of you may go to the Internet, especially a search engine like Google and enter appropriate keywords in its field and hit enter or just click submit! And voila, you will get hundreds or even thousands or even more links.

Why not go to a more specific place, in this case? Recently, I visited this kind of site offering buyers guide and other information related to laptops. General information and comprehensive guide asked by a person who wants to buy a laptop is readily available there!

Not only that, you can also get other information related to laptop. For example from there, I can browse further to dig information about laptop batteries. In this page, you are then able to go further which battery manufacturer you prefer.

Besides, I can also go to a page about wireless card. In these two cases (batteries and wireless cards), we have facility to search any product that meet our requirement. The search options include prize range and brand name preference.

Moreover, I can go to more generic or related categories, such as computers and software and computers and monitors. In sum, this site is worth visiting for helping us before we buy every thing. (To, view more general categories, please visit its homepage.)

How to stop the flood of junk mails (spam mails) from flowing into our mailboxes?

How to stop the flood of junk mails (spam mails) from flowing into our mailboxes? Two tricks are available for this.

Do you know that my mailbox and other colleagues' mailboxes have been flooded by junk mails from spammers? In YSU (Yogyakarta State University aka Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, previously known as IKIP Yogyakarta) here we can have a limited space mailbox if we want to have it. The email address will be in the form of @uny.ac.id. The space is usually 10 Megs. This is comparatively far far smaller than the space provided by free email providers, such as Gmail and Yahoo!. With high daily junk mail flow rate, then we will have additional daily job: removing junk mail spam.

How to solve this? Two tricks are available for this case: 1. Use thunderbird mail client; 2. Use Gmail as spam filterer.

Let's begin with the first method. Follow these steps please:
  1. Download and instal Mozilla Thunderbird.
  2. In the case of mail.uny.ac.id mailserver, we are able to create pop and/or imap connection to the server. Choose either or both connection. Each has its own setting to enter in the installed Mozilla Thunderbird.
  3. Connect using imap connection, I prefer this connection because it is able to directly process folder in the server and at the same time we can have a copy folder in our computer. Open the inbox folder, then you begin to train the Thunderbird to identify which emails are spam, which ones are not.
  4. When the data is enough, the Thunderbird will eventually automatically recognize whether an email is spam or not. When it is spam, we can automatically instruct the Thunderbird to move it to junk folder. Of course, we should first create a junk folder.

Now, what about the second method? In this method, we should contact mail administrator for email URL for management purpose. I forgot the URL for the case of YSU, but at that time when I opened the URL, I could command the server to forward the email to my email account at Googgle Mail (Gmail). There, we have an option whether we want to have a copy or not in YSU mail server. In my case, I prefer to have a copy. This way, when I receive an email to my YSU server, the mail is saved in the inbox and at the same time it is also forwarded to my gmail account. Upon arriving at Gmail account, it will be processed with advanced spam mail processor. Nearly all spam mails are recognized by Gmail, although sometimes I found one or two emails which are not spam but categorized as spam by Gmail. In this case, I can also command Gmail not to categorize the email as spam, and Gmail will learn from my help (I think).

In summary, at least there are two tricks of countering the flood of junk mails. The first is by using Mozilla thunderbird mail client, the second is by forwarding to gmail or yahoo. Both methods are free! Yet, I prefer the second method.

Flood season here in Indonesia!

It is flood season! This become the prove that our education content fails to create people with good environmental awareness. Why flood occurs? It is because we no longer have enough trees (or forests) to retain water from directly go to the sea. Why do they continue to deforestate (to cut trees)? Don't they understand from elementary school education that deforestation causes flood and land abrasion? Of course, they do understand this. But they are blinded by money from deforestation. They need money to be able to live glamorously. They do not care about people suffering from flooding and land abrasion. "As long as I have too much money, flooding is no problem. With my money I can buy a helicopter. Using the heli, I can see the flood from the sky! I will still be able to see great scenery: flood every where!" one of them says.

The calamity occurs and continue to occur. No prompt action taken by the authority here. They are very busy in counting the loss caused by the flood. Counting and keep counting until one day Jakarta will be drown by big flood. This is the time when the authority is drown by their own mismanagement of this beloved country, Indonesia. Good bye the authority! Have a nice big flood!

Life Insurace

I still don't have life insurance. But, recently, I have visited this kind of company, Advantage Life Insurance, http://www.advantagetermlife.com/. The site has interactive form at its homepage, facilitating user to try which insurance option will be best fit tho their needs. The difficulty for me (nurkhamid, the author of this blog) to join the company is that I still have not inclined to insure my life. I still believe in myself and in God (that He will give the best for me).

However in terms of the opinion that man should prepare their best in their life, it seems that to have life insurance is one kind of this realization. Of course, this should be planned based on the income. In the form, given in the website,
http://www.advantagetermlife.com/, the option for the amount is very flexible, ranging from $50,000 to $5,000,000. This indicate that Advantage Life Insurance, http://www.advantagetermlife.com/ shows its flexibility from the first place.

But please remember that this company only accepts the US people.
